As a new semester begins, it's time to embrace a proactive approach to learning and achievement. Join us on a quest to unlock the secrets of academic success with five actionable tips designed to empower students of all ages. Let's embark on this journey together and make this semester our best one yet!

5 Tips For A Great Start

1. Be intentional

The first tip involved being intentional. Intentional is defined as being deliberate and having actions with purpose. What does all this mean? Why does it matter? Many people fail to see the purpose of classes. They quickly assume that the information is useless, so they quit putting effort into it. Try and see the big picture. Get the most out of everything in front of you. Learn as much as you can. Ask yourself, how can this information be helpful to me? When you do things with intent, you have a desire to do them. You get better at them. Live your life this way, and make the most out of all your classes. This will help change your outlook from “I have to go to that boring class” to “I get to go to class, and what I learn will help me in my future”!

2. Set goals

Simple, yet many people don’t do it. Set goals. How can you know what you want to achieve if you do know where you want to go yourself? Write out what you want to achieve this semester. Where do you want to be by the end of the year? Take these goals, and break them down into steps. It is overwhelming to see huge overarching goals that seem unfathomable to reach. Break them down into action steps, and slowly work towards each one. By doing this, you will constantly be making progress, as well as feeling fulfillment within yourself. Instead of feeling down and slacking, never working towards these goals, you will be making progress and becoming a stronger person. A quote I love from Confucius is “When it is obvious goals can’t be reached, don’t adjust the goals, but adjust the action steps.” Get out there, make your goals, break them down, and start working towards them!

3. Get ahead

Do not procrastinate. Many of us have this tendency, including me. We know this about ourselves, yet we continue to fall into the same trap. Let this be the time for you to make that change. Get ahead on your assignments. Make a calendar and stay organized. Try to get your assignments done a week in advance if possible. This will allow you to avoid playing catch-up, and also allow for unexpected events to occur without them setting you back even further. If you start strong early, it will be much easier to stay ahead. Do yourself this favor, as you will be overall more prepared and ready to take on all your exams and assignments, while also lowering your stress levels. It is a great skill to develop and will be applicable throughout life. So start now, and get ahead in life!

4. Reach out

You are not alone. Reach out to your peers, teachers, parents, and anyone (including me)! If you just need to talk to someone, if an unexpected event came up, and anything in between. Try to communicate what is going on in your life to your teachers. If you have a super busy week and are overwhelmed, let them know. Maybe they will extend some deadlines for you, and maybe not. But, in all cases, it is better to communicate what is going on than not. This is something I have struggled with in the past. Try to change your perspective on people, and see the people in your life as a community, see them as your comrades. They are there to help you, but you need to let them know how. You need to keep them updated and let them into your life. Try to communicate more, make study groups with peers, and just reach out more. You will discover more opportunities will come your way, and new doors will constantly be opening!

5. Have fun

While this may seem silly, too often do I see my peers walking to class looking gloomy and unhappy. I’m sure there are things we would all rather be doing, but make the best out of everything. Change your perspective and try to find happiness and enjoyment in your day. It may seem dumb, but you will perform and work better if you are happy if you enjoy going to class. Don’t see each day as a job, only as useless tasks and work, but as an opportunity to develop yourself, progress towards your goals, and become better. Take breaks, find a schedule that makes you happy, and change your perspective from “I have to go to class” to “I get to go to class”. Make it something you look forward to doing, and you will notice it becomes easier to do. Make sure you make time to still do things you love as well: play games, interact with friends, go out and have fun. Just have your priorities down, and stay focused!
